Congratulations to John Haran who graduated from TCD with his PhD on Friday April 10th.

John’s PhD was carried out in the Division of Oral Biosciences within the Dental Hospital, under the supervision of Gary Moran and Derek Sullivan and analysed the function of the telomeric TLO genes in Candida dublineinsis. John carried out part of his studies at the University of Minnesota, a research visit funded by the Society for General Microbiology. John’s research findings were recently published in the prestigious journal PLoS Genetics and solve a long-standing puzzle in the biology of Candida albicans, namely the function of a novel family of genes found at chromosome ends (telomeres). This study showed for the first time that these genes are important regulators of pathogenic traits and suggests a mechanism for how C. albicans may rapidly evolve to cause disease.

Blackboard conferenceKaren Dinneen and Pascaline Fresneau from the Nursing Education Department were delighted to be selected to present at the Blackboard Teaching & Learning Conference on 15th April 2015 in Liverpool.

Their topic was ‘Integrating distance learning into an existing blended learning programme using Blackboard Collaborate: increasing access to a part-time diploma programme for trainee dental nurses all over Ireland using web conferencing technology’. Karen and Pascaline discussed how they used a project management structure to implement the pilot distance learning delivery method, how they integrated the online software Blackboard Collaborate (similar to Skype) into the physical classroom and the challenges and successes they encountered along the way.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the team to highlight the continuing educational developments for dental nursing students especially into the field of distance and online learning in the institution.

This presentation and the progress in Dublin was also complimented in a recent Blackboard blog  by a member of the audience ” …. the presentation delivered by Pascaline Fresneau and Karen Dinneen from the Dublin Dental University Hospital and  Trinity College Dublin discussed how to integrate distance learning into an existing blended learning programme using Blackboard Collaborate and increase access to a part-time diploma.  The distance learning programme was incorporated after demands from students who encountered challenges in travelling to and from the university campus due to transport limitations in more rural parts of Ireland. The new situation resulted in lectures being streamed live from Dublin, with lecturers being supported by coordinators to ensure students – both online and within the classroom – had a great learning experience and were not distracted by the technical needs to conduct the lectures online.”

Dental Treatment for Patients with Haemophilia

image1Dr. Alison Dougall, Clinical Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH), recently won the finals of the 2015 Health Management Institute Leaders Award with the presentation:

“Promoting better access to dental care and a culture of oral health promotion within the haemophilia care pathway”.

The clinical and research work Dr. Dougall centres on the oral health for people with disabilities and complex chronic medical conditions. Her latest research was facilitated by the Irish Haemophilia Society and found that people with bleeding disorders were scared of dentists, dentists were scared of people with bleeding disorders and doctors were scared by anything to do with their mouths. Over the last five years she introduced novel and effective strategies to manage bleeding in the mouth associated with dental care, saving more than €1m in associated hospital costs and providing benefit and peace of mind for patients.

Recognising that poor oral health added unnecessary burdens to patients and reduced their the quality of life and confidence in addition to the impact on their general health, she developed patient-centred care pathways to allow people with haemophilia and other bleeding conditions to safely receive preventive and restorative dental care with their local dentists and hygienists and prevent the need for dental extractions through poor access to preventive dental care. She developed a dental advice helpline for those dentists and hygienists treating patients with bleeding disorders so that the patients were able to benefit from a full range of modern up to date treatment options such as hygiene, fissure sealants, cosmetic work, orthodontics implants and tooth whitening should they wish.

Alison with Leo and awardDr. Alison Dougall trained the medical teams that treat people with haemophilia to be able to offer advice to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as a significant problem and associated with high levels sugar consumption and non-optimal level of oral hygiene and needs a proactive approach by all members of society addressing common risks for diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and tooth decay.

Background on Dr. Dougall

Dr. Dougall has recently been elected as a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the World Federation of Haemophilia with responsibly for oral health and has been invited to be part of the working party advising on the European Principles of Care for people with haemophilia.  Dr Dougall is the past president of the Irish Society of Disability and Oral Health and the Editor of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health.  She is on the Academic Reference Panel for the Department of Health advising on the new Oral Health Policy for Ireland.

Dr. Dougall is an Academic and Clinical Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at the Dublin Dental University Hospital. She is involved in teaching and training of dentists at Dublin University Hospital at undergraduate postgraduate and doctorate level, and she is chair of the Clinical Audit Committee.

As part of her role at DDUH she provides consultant led dental clinics within St Vincent’s University Hospital and St James’s Hospital.

Dr Keelin Fox- Cayman Islands MCADA mouth cancer awareness day was organised on the Cayman Islands by DDUH graduate Dr Keelin Fox.

Keelin trained at the DDUH and following her training she worked as NCHD here. Afterwards she worked with Dr Conor McAllister in general dental practice where she was involved in the organisation of mouth cancer awareness days (MCAD) at the practice. Keelin subsequently moved to work in the Cayman Islands.

In 2015 she organised a MCAD event. Free oral cancer screenings were offered by dentists as part of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s education outreach efforts.  Seven dental clinics took part in the initiative. Keelin said “The day went very well and 181 individuals turned out for screening. That was a record for the Cayman Islands as the most they had was 180 at a prostate screening day after building it up for 5 years. The Cayman Islands Cancer Society was pleased with the result”.

Keelin was happy with the MCAD and hopes that people will now know a little bit more about mouth cancer.  Keelin is pictured here with local politician, Mr Winston Connolly.
